Athletic Placement Process

The Athletic Placement Process was designed for mature and exceptionally skilled student athletes to advance to an upper level and less developed student athletes to participate at an appropriate lower level that is suited to their development and ability. The APP is not to be used to fill positions on teams, provide additional experience, provide an opportunity for middle school or junior high students when no modified program is offered, or to reward a student. It is aimed at a few select student athletes who can benefit from such placement because of their level of readiness.  The Athletic Placement Process is designed to create a more equitable and fair competitive and learning environment for modified level student athletes.

Eighth grade students who demonstrate mental and physical maturity as well as exceptional skill may be advanced to the junior varsity or varsity level through this process. In certain specific circumstances and with permission from the Superintendent of Schools, seventh grade students who also demonstrate the mental and physical maturity as well as exceptional skill may be advanced to the junior varsity or varsity level through this process.

Read the entire Marcellus Athletic Placement Process at the link below.  There are deadlines and requirements that must be met for coaches and any athletes that they want to move through this process.

Coaching Certification

To help provide a safe environment and successful experience for our student athletes who participate on interscholastic athletic teams, Section 135.4 (c) (7) (i) (c) of the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education pertaining to physical education include certain minimum requirements for a person to be appointed as a coach of an interscholastic athletic team. This includes all head coaches and assistants for varsity, junior varsity, middle school (modified) teams of public schools.

Potential secondary school coaches may possess three different backgrounds:

(1) a certified physical education teacher;

(2) a teacher certified in an area other than physical education, e.g. Science, Mathematics, Social Studies;

(3) holds no teaching certificate and must have a sport specific NYS Professional Coaching License or qualify for a sport specific NYS Temporary Coaching License.

Volunteer Coaches
Volunteer coaches are subject to the same coaching requirements as a paid coach.
