Marcellus launches new tool for anonymous safety tips

Oct. 4, 2019 -- The Marcellus Central School District is changing the way members of the school community can submit reports of bullying and other school safety issues to school administrators.

Currently, students and concerned community members can access a reporting tool via the district website that enables them to submit information anonymously. This process, however, does not provide administrators with a way to ask clarifying questions. This lack of two-way communication can unnecessarily slow down an investigation. As a result, the district will now begin using a free smartphone app, MCS TipLine.

Developed by tip411, the app puts a powerful new school safety tool into the hands of students seeking assistance for themselves or their fellow students. The MCS TipLine app can be downloaded for free via the Google Play Store and iTunes App Store.

“It is important for us to seek ways to provide our students with a safe and welcoming school,” Superintendent of Schools Michelle Brantner said. “Offering this improved way to make an anonymous report will assist us in achieving the climate our students deserve. Having the ability to seek and receive additional information when reports are made will optimize our capacity to find resolutions for the complex challenges facing our students in today’s world.”

The MCS TipLine app and anonymous tip system are 100% anonymous, as the technology removes all identifying information before administrators see the tips and there is no way to identify the sender. Once someone sends a tip, administrators receive it immediately and can respond back to create an anonymous two-way conversation.

“The tip411 system has been successful in communities across the U.S.,” said Terry Halsch, president of tip411. “We are excited to partner with Marcellus Central School District to bring our tip411 system to their schools, enabling students to participate in promoting safety in their halls.”

Those without a smartphone can send tips via the district website or by texting tips anonymously to school officials by using their school’s unique keyword. Simply send a text message to 847411, begin the message with one of the following keywords, type in the information you wish to share and hit send. This will create an anonymous, two-way text conversation in which administrators can respond in real-time.
